Workshop Instructor:

Michael J. Piper, M.L., M.A., J.D. (Workshop Director/Co-instructor, Des Moines site) is certified by the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators as a Spanish<>English interpreter-translator. He is also an ATA-Certified translator (English>Spanish) with 20 years of experience in the language services field. He is Program Chair/Instructor of Interpretation and Translation at the Des Moines Area Community College (Urban Campus). He also owns and operates Iowa Multilingual Solutions, LLC. Michael has provided extensive court interpreting in federal court, and has done expert witness work for state court. He is President of the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association (IITA), and Treasurer of the Society for the Study of Translation and Interpretation (SSTI). Michael is  a recent graduate of Drake University Law School and been admitted to the Iowa Bar.

Patricia Hillock is a Certified Federal Court Interpreter.  She owns and operates Spanish Language Services and provides professional interpretation and translation services in Spanish and English.  Due to the fact that her father worked for an international firm, she was raised in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Spain, the United States and has also lived in Canada and Switzerland.  This allowed her to not only live and study in foreign countries, but also become part of the culture.  In addition to living in these countries, she has traveled to many more.  She has been a Spanish-English interpreter/translator for over 30 years and started her career as a technical translator for an international firm in Madrid, Spain.  Since then she has worked in public relations and as a translator-interpreter for conference interpreting, escort interpreting, medical interpreting and judicial interpreting in Europe, South America and the United States.  Since 2004, she has helped conduct the Iowa Court Interpreter Orientation Workshop and has taught skill-building classes sponsored by the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association.  In addition, she  is a member of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters, the American Translators Association, the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, and is a founding member on the Board of the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association, Inc.
