Translating for the Capital Markets (Plenary Session) (Marian Greenfield): An overview of financial translation concentrating on the equity markets, with an in-depth discussion of prospectus and bond terminology. This session is expected to be interactive, so please be ready with your own ideas and opinions and any translation conundrums for Spanish/English. Other languages are welcome, although the presenter may have less input in the discussion of those specific terms. Please make sure to bring along at least a couple of sentences of context for any questions you may have.

Connecting Cultures, Inc.: Small Business, Big Heart (Rashelle LeCaptain): Connecting Cultures, Inc. is a local interpreting agency in Northeast Wisconsin that staffs, hires, and trains already bi-lingual individuals to interpret in the health care and community setting.  The agency's challenges and victories of the last seven years will be shared, including discussion of what every person should know before starting a business.  Participants will look at the journey to starting a small business, where Connecting Cultures is today, and the ups and downs of owning your own business.  Attendees will learn about the importance of business plans, goals and mission statements.  They will come away with a better understanding of what it is to work in the interpreting and translating field from the perspective on one small agency.

Court Security (Kelly Palmer & Lorena P. Martin): The presentation focuses on practical security concepts and principles, both in and outside the court environment, including information security and personal security awareness. The presentation includes video and visuals of actual courthouse security events. Participants will become more security-conscious members of the court family. Advisory: Some of the material presented during the session depicts violent events.

Frames, Maxims, and Other Interpreting Pitfalls (Katherine A. Langan): Drawing on various areas of discourse analysis including frame analysis and the Gricean Maxims, this presentation will look at how routine questions can present problems for interpreting, especially when the presuppositions about the context are not shared.  The majority of examples will come from the medical context.  Strategies for anticipating and managing these situations will be offered.  Participation from the floor will be welcome.

Getting Down to Business! (Colin Peterson): Often times within the interpretation/translation industry we are language technicians first and small business owners second.  Putting technical skills to work in a profitable manner requires fully understanding the business elements of record keeping, marketing, pricing, and managing client relationships. This presentation will be structured as a forum for freelance interpreters/translators to learn from each other and share some of the lessons they’ve learned about running a small business.

Iowa's Multilingual Emergency Response Network Needs You! (Loren Bawn & Colin Peterson): The Iowa Disaster Human Resource Council (IDHRC) brings together interfaith, voluntary and governmental organizations active in disaster services to foster a more effective response and recovery for the people of Iowa in times of disaster.  This presentation will educate attendees about the Council and a project it is sponsoring to address the disaster/emergency needs of Iowans with limited English proficiency. The Council’s Multilingual Emergency Response Network (MLERN) will help assure that people with limited English proficiency are prepared for, able to respond to, and recover from natural and man-made disasters through effective, coordinated communication and caring services.

Sight Translation in Business and Financial Sectors (Rubén Arias-Pe): Business and financial language along with technology are increasingly important in people's everyday life. Credit cards and bank statements, agreements, Insurance documents, IRS letters with inquires are stuffing our mailboxes every day. These documents need to be read carefully, because many times some action is required. It is a hard enough task for English speakers, but for foreign language speakers this is more than a challenge, is a problem. Lack of knowledge of the correct meaning could cost money or lead to identity theft, forgery, fraud and embezzlement. The presentation will consider the business and financial sectors as a specialization in Interpretation and translation studies, with discussion of sight translation and glossary preparation.

Stylistics Concerns in the Translation of Biopharmeceutical Documents (Christian Schmitz): As many project managers know, large-volume projects pose unique logistic challenges, especially if they continue over several years. First and foremost, the translation company has to spend a great deal of time and resources identifying and supporting the client’s terminology needs, constantly revising and updating the project glossary. If several translators are involved, the importance of establishing a set of well-defined style rules is often overlooked or underappreciated. In this session, we will discuss how to best identify pertinent style rules using various biopharmaceutical texts as examples.
